The lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja

A pink water lake.

Can you see yourself standing next to a sapphire pink lake filled with a pack of wild flamingos? Sounds a bit unreal right? If you happen to reside or holiday often in or near Torrevieja, located in the southeast of Spain, then this is a real fact of daily life. The nature park of Las Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja, next to the N-332 road, is one of the most beautiful natural parks in the Alicante province of the Valencia region and has great vegetation, an extraordinary variety of fauna and eccentric beauty.

In fact, the nature park is divided into two locations, the Laguna de la Mata, a water reserve, which is separated from Las Salinas de Torrevieja by an anticline (a formation of stratified rock elevated up) known as the Chaparral. Both locations are connected to the ocean by a canal known as Acequión.

Due to special algae, dunaliella (micro-seaweeds), that inhabit the bottom of lakes and are teeming with microorganisms, archaea (a microorganism), which synthesize the components of the salty water in order to survive. The existence of these two forms of life is what provides the pink, distinctive colour of the water. The flamingos feed on algae, small seeds, tiny crustaceans (like brine shrimp), fly larvae, and other plants and animals that live in shallow waters. This is what provides the pink colour of the flamingos.

Las Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja is spread across 1,400 hectares and in the 13th century, the canal was built for the purpose of retrieving salt from the sea. Huge piles of salt piled up along the shore are a remnant of the city's past. It has been a protected area since 1994, and it attracts an average of 15,000 visits per year.

The wildlife.

The nature park of Las Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja is a refuge that harbours rich marine fauna and is an enclave of wetlands that are of vital importance for the biological development of many species. Flamingos are the most well known, although there is a presence of the black-necked grebe along with the curassow, the common tern, the white jar, the Montagu's harrier, the stone curlew and the little tern.

The plant life.

Although there is not much vegetation in the area due to the high saline of the sea, the nature park of Las Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja presents a list of some magnificent species of flora. Only a few plants, including alacranera (Arthrocnemum macrostachyum) and several varieties of juncus, suaedas, salicornas, and salsolas, could live in this extremely salty environment.

Saladillas (lavender), groundsel, and even the complex but showy shaped orchids (collina) can be seen in full bloom when flowering season arrives in Las Salinas. However, to the south of the lake, where the salt levels are lower, more usual Mediterranean vegetation such as pine trees and even eucalyptus can be found.

Plant forms in the nature park are well adapted to the high saline content of the soils that surround its lakes. It also includes very distinctive marsh plant species that are found alone on these coasts and receive contributions from continental seas. The reed and the tamarit stand out among these swampy structures. Glasswort species with unusual characteristics, such as hogweed, can be found in the most saline environments.
