TIE - Tarjeta de Identidad Extranjero
The TIE residency card.
Launched in July 2020, the TIE, short for Tarjeta de Identidad Extranjero, is a biometric credit card-sized photo ID card. It is intended to replace the previously issued green citizenship A4 certificate or a small green residency card for British residents.
The TIE card is optional to obtain if you already have the issued green citizenship A4 certificate or small green residency card, along with a valid Spanish residency card.
Under the new Withdrawal Agreement, British citizens who have the green citizenship A4 certificate or small green residency card, since before the end of December in 2020 have the right to reside in Spain.
If you do not already have Spanish citizenship before the end of 2020, you will need to apply for a TIE Spanish Residency Card.
Already have a green card.
If you have an issued green citizenship A4 certificate or small green residency card and have been residing in Spain before the date of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, it is advisable to attain the TIE card, sooner rather than later, as this provides so many advantages to living in Spain.
Eventually, it will become mandatory to attain the TIE card for previously residing ‘Ex Pats’ in Spain.
Obtaining the TIE card can be a straightforward process, and with the assistance of a consultant, it can be stress-free.
The typical process.
The process of obtaining the TIE card involves:
Completing a ‘modelo 790’ form and paying a processing fee at your Spanish bank, which will be stamped to display proof of payment.
Completing an EX-23 TIE application form.
Bringing your active passport.
Bringing your existing green card.
If you have moved to a new property since receiving your original green card, you will need to obtain a ‘Padrón’ certificate.
Bringing multiple passport-sized pictures.
Not already a Spanish resident.
If you are new to living in Spain, the first step will be to fill out your residency application form and schedule an appointment with your nearest immigration office (Oficina de Extranjeros), which will be located in your home province.
You will need to schedule an appointment and bring documents that identify yourself and prove that you meet the criteria to live in Spain. These documents should include:
Health care coverage
Proof of financial means to support yourself whilst living in Spain. This can include a work contract, business accounts, pension accounts, or savings accounts
Along with these documents, you will also provide:
Valid passport.
Application form EX20.
Documents that show you have been residing in Spain before 31 December 2020, if applicable.
Completing the application.
In order to apply for the TIE card, your first have to apply for residency, if not already claimed.
Upon submitting the residency application, you will receive a receipt that will allow you to stay in Spain temporarily, while you are waiting for your response.
When the application has been submitted there is no set time limit for receiving an approval status. Though, typically this is approved within a three-month period.
If your application is approved, you will then be able to submit an application for claiming the TIE card. This process must be completed within 30 days of receiving the outcome from the residency application.
This process is the same for new and existing residents at this stage. By organising all of the necessary documents and planning your appointments, the process should go much more smoothly, which may assist in claiming the TIE card much sooner.
